What Life Looks Like in Boarding

BSS Boarding is an international community and a community unto itself. Boarders develop an understanding of their impact on others by connecting and engaging with their peers and the broader community.

Community

Each boarder belongs to a Boarding Family and each Family is part of a House. Families and Houses include students from all grades. Boarders participate in House Games, Boarders build a sense of belonging, comfort and spirit within the community. Older boarders support and mentor younger ones. It’s another way we make the atmosphere warm and engaging.

Unstoppable Life Skills

Boarders have the option to attend skill-building workshops on Sunday nights. Topics include cooking, self-care, time management, budgeting and more.

Monday Night Dinners

At weekly Monday Night Dinners, boarders gather to share a meal in a mixed-age group, followed by cultural and student-led activities.

Learning to Lead

The Boarding Council, led by the Head Boarder and composed of members with formal leadership roles, sets the tone and spirit for Boarding during the year. All Grade 12 boarders are considered leaders and role models. There are also other leadership opportunities through various Boarding Committees and within the broader school.

Exploring the City and Beyond

Living in the heart of Toronto allows boarders to explore the local neighbourhood, the city beyond and other communities. Some off-campus adventures have included Canada’s Wonderland, the Toronto islands, Kensington market, Niagara Falls and Quebec City.

Well-being

We offer a comprehensive range of evening and weekend programming, including fitness classes, outdoor education, team sports, food and nutrition workshops and mental health and well-being resources. This programming is led by BSS Well-being staff and external coaches and educators. These activities help students understand their own needs, and prioritize their physical and social-emotional health.

“Since coming to boarding, I have developed independence and confidence in my school work and personal life. Boarding has taught me to be myself and that I will find my place and my people.”

Marianne, Grade 11 student

Julia, Grade 8 student

“Boarding is a kind and welcoming environment. I’ve been able to learn about and experience new cultures, and I have made friends from all over the world. “

Lorrie, Grade 10 student
